The cist burials with Food Vessels at the centres of circles of great stones (12, 144–5, I9°) must certainly rank as graves of chiefs or chieftainesses and so probably should the cremations in the Recumbent Stone circles of the north-east, if they are correctly referred to stage IV. The same must be said of the extended burials in long cists. In Egypt, Greece, Sicily, and Central Europe, the change from contracted to extended burial was a concomitant of increasing wealth quite without ethnic significance;1 in Egypt, for instance, it began as the prerogative Pharaoh and his nobles about 3000 B.C. and gradually spread down the social ladder till by 2000 only the very poorest were still buried doubled up.1 In Scotland the process was presumably arrested by the spread of cremation.
